2.No one talks about or refers to candy in the book as he is not an important figure in the story and at the point in the book when the men are talking about candy’s dog saying that ‘ he aint no good to himself’ in other words calling him useless. John Steinbeck uses Candy’s dog as a symbol of candy so when the men are describing the dog they actually referring to him, Steinbeck has purposely done this rather than it being said to and about candy directly.

4. In the book when Carlson is describing the dog (which is really referring to candy) he says ‘well, you ain’t been kind to be keepin’ him alive’, we know from this that Carlson is actual meaning is that candy is no good and saying ‘ain’t been kind keepin’ him alive’ he’s saying that candy is better dead even though it isn’t directly show in the book.
5. In the book Candy has no clear role or purpose as he has no major significance compared to many other characters in the book yet he is constantly being brought into most situations.
